Julie has worked for McDonalds for 10 years, during which time she progressed to the position of 1st Assistant in the Eastleigh Restaurant. Earlier this year she was offered the opportunity to change her role and take responsibility for the Apprenticeship programme and build community links within Tony Bennetts Franchisee group of 9 restaurants. She has worked hard to implement a robust system that helps her manage 34 apprentices. She has completed her first 2 in the last few months and is one sign off away from achieving golden pen status. Her work in the local communities is varied, I have listed below the key headlines: She hosts the weekly Senior Citizen coffee mornings in the Eastleigh restaurant. She works with the a number of local PCSO's in Southampton and Bournemouth, in conjunction with various litter and community projects   (in particular mentoring Anti Social behaviour order teenagers), She Co-ordinated 9 RMHC fundraising events in Sept 11 across her franchisee group raising £1550. She has built strong links with Local schools in a number of the restaurants, that have gone on to support litter events for 'Love where you live'. She has also involved numerous Beaver and Scout groups, helping with restaurant visits, fundraising and litter collection. Matt has taken a keen interest in grass roots football in Plymouth. He manages our link with grass roots football for all Dave Wynne's Plymouth restaurants. He has been an integral part of the club twinning programme which sees all 5 Plymouth restaurants twinned with a local youth football team. Matt arranged a McDonalds community football festival in Sept last year which included a tournament and was attended by over 2000 members of the local community along with sports personalities, local MP, and local radio station. Matt has played a role in the provision and presentation of training equipment to each of the twinned clubs. Matt is currently involved with Devon Football Association and their 'Get into Football' campaign. The objective of this is 'Football for all' and it aims to get kids who may not normally have access to team sports and would perhaps be hanging around on the street. He is trying to help make football more accessible to the less priviledged. Matt has co-ordinated links with the local PCSO's and their youth work also aimed at giving kids an opportunity to get involved in team sports instead of crime. As a baby John was very quiet and did not babble, and his speech did not develop although he understood and responded in his own way to commands. At 2 it was discovered that he had glue ear. He had the operation to fit gromits and as parents we thought his speech would then develop normally. When he was assessed he only had 4 words and we were told that he was lip reading. After a year of speech therapy and only vowel sounds as a family we had to leave Aberdeen to go to Stockton on Tees. Devastated at leaving Scotland I threw myself into making a new life for the family. We met a friend who in twice meeting John told me he had dyspraxia. She agreed to go into School and work with him and the teachers. His speech was now perfect within one year of therapy but he still struggled with Gym and ball games. When we played football he would pick the ball up and run away with it. His school helped on a daily basis and did exercises with him. After years of struggling he now referees Rugby, is a scout leader, was a member of youth parliament. At 14 he organised 100 scouts to carry flags at Murrayfield for the Calcutta Cup. At 17 he was diagnosed with Asbergers he never uses his difficulties as an excuse that he can`t do things. He never thought he would pass his exams but he proved us all wrong by 2-A 1-B 3-C AT intermediate 2 this year sitting higher Business management. He has a job in McDonalds and he has applied to volunteer at the Olympics. His real ambition is to referee 7`s rugby. Andy is 22 and was a young carer to his two disabled parents since he was six years old. This badly affected his schooling, meaning that his attendance dramaticaly dropped and he actually missed his SATs in Year 9. Yet he turned it around and was successful in his GCSEs and A Levels, and graduated last summer with a Law Degree from Cambridge University. Andy constantly tries to help more people achieve their full potential and has been elected as the Sabbatical Access Officer for Cambridge University Students' Union. He has been tireless in his work to encourage more young people to consider applying to Cambridge and higher education in general. At weekends, he is also a Shift Manager at McDonalds, helping crew members to gain an apprenticeship in hospitality in order to improve their qualifications. He won Employee of the Quarter for the Central-West Region in 2007 for his efforts. He has been an active advocate for the needs of young carers and their families, locally and nationally, regularly talking about his experiences to both young carers and professionals, and volunteering every year at the National Young Carers' Festival. In 2006, he was asked by The Children's Society to fly out to Nairobi as a UK delegate, to represent the voices of Young Carers. He was also asked to sit on The Children's Society's Trustee Board. He is now trying to save enough money to pay for the course needed to qualify as a Legal Aid solicitor, whilst also continuing to help his parents.Update: I am now 23, am now working at McDonalds full-time after my role as CUSU Access Officer ended in July (it is a one-year position) and I am applying to do a PGCE in Citizenship for 2012 entry before law school at some point after that.
